How do you break into basketball agency work?
Short answer
To become a certified NBA agent, an applicant applies to the NBPA, pays a $750 application fee, passes a background check and a January exam in New York City, then pays $1,250 in pro-rated dues, per the NBPA. The agent fee is capped at 4 percent of each season's pay. The 2026-27 application window closed October 30, 2026.

What are the NBPA agent certification requirements?
How to become an NBA agent starts with the NBPA agent certification requirements: an application, a four-year degree or accepted experience, a background investigation and a passing score on the agent exam, per Section 2 of the NBPA regulations. The NBPA may accept relevant negotiating experience in place of years of formal education, in its unreviewable discretion. Only individuals qualify, not entities, and international applicants are allowed, per the NBPA agent FAQ. Certification covers NBA and G League players, not NCAA or international representation. The NBA agent guide lists each step, and WNBA certification is separate, as the guide on how to become a WNBA agent explains in full.
How do you apply for an NBPA agent license?
How to apply for NBPA agent license steps depends on the window. The 2026-27 application opened September 22 and closed October 30, 2026, and the next window had not been announced as of November 1, per the NBPA agents page. Applicants submit the application and fee online, and the exam is held in person once a year, in January, in New York City, with results typically within 30 days, per the NBPA FAQ.

What does the NBPA certification cost?
The sports agent certification fee NBPA charges is $750 to apply, which covers the background investigation and educational resources. After passing, $1,250 in pro-rated annual dues is due, per the NBPA FAQ. Annual dues from September 1, 2026 are $2,500 for agents with up to nine clients, $5,000 for 10 to 19 and $7,500 for 20 or more, due each July 1. Certification lapses if dues go unpaid, per the regulations. A lapsed agent must reapply as a new applicant, per the regulations.
What should you know about the exam, the study guide and the pass rate?
The exam covers the 2025 NBPA regulations and the 2023 CBA, and the FAQ names the CBA articles to study, per the NBPA FAQ. As for an NBPA agent exam study guide, the NBPA provides educational resources with the application fee and a virtual review of the regulations, but it does not endorse third-party practice exams, and sample questions appear in the FAQ. Sports Business Classroom built an exam prep program with Bobby Marks and Eric Pincus, and it has supported more than 230 prospective agents, per HallPass in December 2025. The NBA agent exam pass rate is not published: the FAQ, the regulations and the HallPass article give no figure. Applicants can retake the exam by reapplying in a later window.
What does the NBA player agent background check include?
The NBA player agent background check, run by Global Background Screening, verifies education, work experience, civil and criminal history and includes a review of social media activity, per the NBPA FAQ. The regulations list grounds for denial, including failing the exam, false statements and holding oneself out as an agent before certification.
How much commission do NBA agents make?
How much commission NBA agents make is limited by the sports agent commission cap NBA rules set. An agent may charge no more than 4 percent of each season's negotiated compensation, 2 percent where the player receives only the minimum, and for first-round rookies 4 percent of pay above the 80 percent amount the scale guarantees, per Section 4.B of the regulations. Only base salary, signing bonuses and performance bonuses actually received count, and no fee is due until the player is paid. The guide to agent pay explains the economics.

What are the NBA player agent rules and regulations?
NBA player agent rules regulations are the NBPA's Regulations Governing Player Agents, as amended in September 2025, together with Article XXXVI of the collective bargaining agreement. The collective bargaining agreement sports agents work under requires teams to negotiate only with certified agents or the player, and the NBPA gives the NBA a list of certified agents, updated every two weeks from the day after the Finals to the first day of the regular season, per the CBA. Agents attend an NBPA seminar each year unless excused, and from July 1, 2027 agents certified fewer than three years must stay Active, per the regulations.
Is there an NBPA registered agents directory?
Yes. The NBPA registered agents directory is public and searchable by name and region, and it listed 750 results on November 1, 2026, per the NBPA directory. The page does not say whether the count includes every certified agent or only active ones.
Can a parent represent an NBA player?
A parent can advise a player, but negotiating with an NBA team requires either NBPA certification or the player acting for himself, per Section 1 of the regulations and Article XXXVI of the CBA. The text reviewed offers no family exemption. Certified agents face conflict rules, and the regulations bar paying a family member to steer a player to an agent. This reading comes from the text and is not an NBPA statement about parents.
Do a sports management degree or a law degree help?
Both can help, though the NBPA requires a four-year degree in any field or accepted experience, per the NBPA FAQ. A sports management degree NBA agent candidates hold builds knowledge of contracts and the business, and the question "can law degree help become sports agent" has a full answer in the law degree or sports management degree guide. Aaron Mintz studied sports management at Michigan, and Austin Brown attended law school, per Boardroom, so both paths appear in the profiles in Part 2.
How do you get a job at a sports agency or find an internship?
How to get a job at a sports agency starts with entry roles. CAA's careers pages describe entry roles such as assistant, mailroom, reception and floater, with placement not guaranteed, and paid internships for current students, including CAA Sports, per CAA's careers pages (entry-level roles, internships). The summer 2027 internship window ran October 5 to 30, 2026. No degree requirement was stated on the pages reviewed. For a sports agency internship basketball hopefuls pursue, the same pattern of entry roles and seasonal windows applies at several firms, though other agencies' pages did not load for this series. Agents notice that every route begins with learning the rulebook above.
How do people contact sports agencies for representation?
How to contact sports agencies for representation is a question for players and families, and rules differ by level. College players have NCAA and state rules, covered in the guide to checking an agent. This series does not direct readers to any firm. Checking an agent before any conversation is the safer habit.
How do you pitch an NBA player as an agent?
How to pitch an NBA player as an agent starts with certification, because holding oneself out as an agent before certification is a ground for denial under Section 2.C. After that, a professional pitch is a written plan: what services the agent offers, the fee limits above and a verifiable record. The guide to how new agents find clients and the FIBA version cover practical methods.
For a structured plan covering the first 90 days after certification, the Aspiring Agent Launch Kit and Becoming a Basketball Agent: The Launch Plan cover the steps in order.
What is a day in the life of a basketball agent?
A day in the life of a basketball agent mixes negotiation, compliance and relationships. Agents track roster moves and cap rules, keep up with NBPA seminars and annual dues, and handle marketing requests, all inside the fee caps above. Agents notice that the work is steady and unglamorous, with a few high-stakes weeks around the draft and free agency. The role looks different for each client type, as the coach representation guide shows.
