How much do American players make in Australia's NBL, and how do imports sign?
Short answer
No import pay scale is published. For 2026-27 the NBL lists a $2,167,358.92 salary cap per club, an $88,754.76 minimum salary and marquee cap tiers up to $535,121.73, Clubs may carry four imports and marquees combined. Reported top deals reach about $1 million, and the NBL publishes no import average.
How much do American players make in the NBL?
There is no published NBL salary for American players, so any single number would be a guess. What the league does publish is the frame every contract sits inside. For NBL27, the 2026-27 season, the salary cap rose 7% to $2,167,358.92 per club, the salary floor is $1,950,642.53 and the minimum salary is $88,754.76, up from $82,948.37, per the NBL. The league's table gives no currency label, but a 2019 Pick and Roll guide describes US dollar import deals being converted into the cap, which indicates the figures are Australian dollars.
The cap is soft, so a club can spend past it and pay luxury tax, per the NBL. A marquee contract counts against the cap at a fixed tier, from $267,560.09 to $535,121.73 in 2026-27, per the NBL. That is why a salary and a cap number can be far apart. The NBL's review of NBL26 spending quotes ESPN's Olgun Uluc putting Bryce Cotton's contract at around $1.3 million, with a cap hit of about $250,000, and Adelaide's cash spend closer to $6 million had he remained an American import. The piece adds that three clubs spent closer to $5 million than $4 million.
At the top, ESPN's Olgun Uluc wrote in August 2025, in a piece published by the NBL, that four players have reached $1 million a year, and he cites Xavier Cooks as having reset the market for top locals. The piece flags the figures as secondhand, and Cooks is a local, not an import. A reader should treat them as the ceiling of the market, not the norm. A third-party guide offers a $100,000 to $300,000 US range for top Australian and import players, per Roundball Guide, but it cites no source for it, so this guide does not rely on it.
How many imports can an NBL team sign?
Each club can carry four imports and marquees combined, per the NBL. An import in the NBL is a player who is not Australian or New Zealander, per the 2019 Pick and Roll guide. A 2023 explainer put imports alone at three per roster inside those four spots, per Only Sports Media. The league's agreement with its players' association is not public: Pick and Roll reported in 2019 that the association called it commercial in confidence, and no current public copy was found. Confirm the count for the season in the offer.
The Next Stars program sits outside those spots. It lets a club add an NBA draft-caliber prospect without using an import spot or cap space, and the NBL paid the salary, per Only Sports Media in 2023. The program says it has produced seven first-round picks, and Karim Lopez went 21st in the 2026 draft, per Next Stars. It is a prospect route, not a veteran route, and current eligibility rules were not found in public sources.
Import spots turn over fast. Six imports had left their clubs less than a month into NBL26, and half the league made a change, per Basketball Australia. A signed import should read the release terms as closely as the pay.

How does an American player get an NBL contract?
No source reviewed describes an open tryout or application for imports. Clubs fill import spots through agents and their own scouting, the same way overseas placement works in general, as how new FIBA agents find clients and clubs explains. NBL free agency for 2026-27 opened April 17, 2026, per the NBL, but import moves continue after tip-off, as the turnover above shows.
- Film. Current game film and a full season of stats, from college or a pro league.
- Representation. An agent placing a player abroad handles an international deal, a role covered in how to become a FIBA agent.
- Contract. Pay, guarantee, release and any NBA exit in writing before travel.
Agents notice that clubs talk about the cap number while a player talks about take-home pay, and in the NBL the two can differ by a wide margin. The general mechanics of an overseas deal, from net pay to arbitration, are in the overseas contracts guide, and the full menu of routes is in how to play professional basketball. What does the season look like compared with Europe?
NBL27 opens Saturday, September 19, 2026, per the NBL. The regular season runs 21 rounds with each club playing at least 33 games, per the NBL. The season page on Wikipedia lists the regular season ending February 14, 2027, with a play-in in February and finals in March. That leaves a spring and summer open. In May 2025 the NBL quoted Pete Hooley saying clubs pitch imports on a full year of earning potential, with China and Puerto Rico named as other places imports can earn, per the NBL.
European leagues run on different calendars and each sets its own in-season registration rules. The EuroLeague, for example, closed outside registrations on February 25 in 2025-26, per BasketNews, and the rest are laid out in the mid-season exit guide. For how a EuroLeague club's budget translates to player pay, see the EuroLeague spending levels post. No source reviewed compares total NBL pay with European pay on one basis, so the two are best compared offer to offer.

Do NBL contracts include housing, a car and flights?
Not in anything published. No NBL or club source found says what an import's package covers. A third-party guide lists housing, transport and round-trip flights as common in overseas deals generally, per Roundball Guide, but it does not say which apply to the NBL. Ask for each item by name: housing or an allowance, a vehicle, flights in and out, health insurance and who pays the visa costs. The overseas contracts guide lists the same items for any market.
What does a player need to clear before signing in Australia?
Three things, in this order.
- A visa. A third-party summary says Australia's Temporary Activity visa, subclass 408, has a sporting stream for elite players invited by an Australian team, requiring a sponsor or supporting organisation, a national sporting body endorsement and a formal contract covering pay and duties, per VisaEnvoy. The Department of Home Affairs page was not reachable for this guide, so confirm the current stream and documents with the club.
- A clearance. A player whose last club was registered with another federation needs a letter of clearance, which the old federation has six days to answer under article 3-74 of FIBA Book 3. The process and refusal grounds are in the FIBA letter of clearance guide.
- An exit. Ask whether the contract has a buyout clause or an out clause for the NBA, and read the mid-season terms before signing.
Australian tax on a foreign athlete's pay was not reviewed for this guide. Take that question to a tax adviser before the contract is signed.
