What is a team option in an NBA contract, and how do rookie scale options work?
Short answer
A team option is a contract year the team alone decides to keep. On a first-round rookie scale deal, years three and four are team options, and each must be exercised by October 31 (the next business day if that is a weekend or federal holiday). A declined option sends the player to free agency early: one year early for a fourth-year option, two for a third-year option.
This guide reads the operative text of the 2023 NBA collective bargaining agreement. For the news that makes the topic timely, see the post on the Bulls and the November 2 deadline.
What is a team option in an NBA contract?
A team option is an extra contract year that only the team can choose to add. If the team exercises it, the player is under contract for that season on terms set in advance. If the team does not, the contract ends after the last guaranteed season.
The CBA allows two kinds of team option. One sits inside every first-round rookie scale contract. The other is a veteran option, which a team and player negotiate. A player option works the other way: the player decides.

How do rookie scale team options work?
A first-round rookie scale contract covers two seasons, plus a team option for the third season and a second team option for the fourth, per Article VIII, Section 1(a) of the CBA. The rookie scale sets the pay by draft slot. The full rules for the first contract are in the 2026 rookie scale guide.
Both option years are priced in advance. The contract must pay at least the greater of 80 percent of the scale amount and the minimum salary in each of the first two seasons and the first option year, and salary plus unlikely bonuses cannot pass 120 percent of scale, per Article VIII, Section 1(c)(i). The second option year must be raised over the first by the percentage in the rookie scale, with all other terms unchanged, per Section 1(c)(iii).
The same section requires protection of at least 80 percent of the scale amount for lack of skill and injury or illness through the first option year, per Section 1(c)(ii). That protection is a floor, so a rookie option year is at least 80 percent protected, not necessarily fully guaranteed. The terms are explained in the guaranteed contract guide.
When must a team exercise or decline an option?
The third-season option can be exercised from the day after the first season ends through the next October 31, and the fourth-season option follows the same pattern after the second season, per Article VIII, Section 1(a). If October 31 falls on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. In 2026 the deadline is Monday, November 2, per Yardbarker, republishing Hoops Rumors.
The team must give notice to the player or the player's representative by hand, email or mail, signed by the team, per the same section.

What happens if a team declines the option?
The player's contract ends after the last guaranteed season, and he becomes an unrestricted free agent that summer, one or two years sooner than if both options had been exercised. A first-round pick whose option was not exercised is excluded from the restricted free agency track that applies to most players with three or fewer years of service, per Article XI, Section 4(b). He can sign anywhere, as covered in the guide to rookie extensions and restricted free agency.
The old team can still re-sign him, but a new contract is capped. For a first-round pick whose option was not exercised, a new deal with the team that signed him can provide first-year pay of up to what the declined option year would have paid, per Article VII, Section 6(n)(3). A team that wants to pay more has to act before the option date, through a rookie scale extension.
How do veteran team options differ?
A veteran team option is negotiated, not built in. It can add no more than one year, can be exercised once and must pay at least 100 percent of the last guaranteed year's salary and bonuses, with other terms unchanged, per Article XII, Section 1. The CBA bars conditional options, so the right to exercise must be fixed when the contract is signed, per Article XII, Section 3.
The exercise date for veteran options is set by the CBA at 5 p.m. Eastern on the June 29 before the option season, per Article XII, Section 4. The next season's payroll is built around the salary cap, so these dates matter to team planning.
Which options are due in 2026?
Options on 2027-28 are due by November 2. Players drafted in 2024 face fourth-year options, and players drafted in 2025 face third-year options, per Yardbarker. The pending list included Kon Knueppel's third-year option at $11,017,560 for Charlotte and Zaccharie Risacher's fourth-year option at $17,434,636 for Dallas, per the same list. It showed none for the Warriors, Pacers or Heat. A Hoops Rumors deadline guide reports that 27 teams hold options, per Hoops Rumors.
Players from the 2023 class are past this stage: their rookie extension deadline was October 19, covered in the post on the seven who signed.
What should a player and agent watch?
Agents notice that the option date marks the start of the next negotiation, not the end of the last one. A player whose option is likely to be declined has a short window to ask about an extension or a trade before the date. A player whose option will be picked up has a guaranteed year and a clearer picture of the free agency timeline, which is in the restricted free agency guide.
