Seven 2023 first-rounders signed rookie scale extensions by the October 19 deadline, and 14 did not
The short version
Seven players from the 2023 first round signed rookie scale extensions before the 6 p.m. Eastern deadline on October 19, 2026, per Hoops Rumors. Fourteen did not sign and become eligible for restricted free agency in the 2027 offseason. Victor Wembanyama was the only player to sign a maximum extension.
This post is dated as of October 20, 2026, the morning after the deadline. The rule behind the deadline is explained in the rookie scale extension guide.
Who signed a rookie scale extension by the deadline?
Seven players signed, per the Hoops Rumors recap of the deadline. The deadline was 6 p.m. Eastern on Monday, October 19, per NBA.com. All seven deals run five years.
| Player | Team | Reported total |
|---|---|---|
| Victor Wembanyama | Spurs | Maximum extension |
| Brandon Miller | Hornets | $209 million |
| Amen Thompson | Rockets | $208 million |
| Keyonte George | Jazz | $157.5 million |
| Ausar Thompson | Pistons | $155 million |
| Cason Wallace | Thunder | $139 million |
| Brandin Podziemski | Warriors | $110 million |
Miller's deal was reported about an hour before the deadline, per Hoops Rumors. Hoops Rumors lists George's deal as $155 million plus $2.5 million in incentives and Wallace's as $135 million plus $4 million, so the higher totals above include the incentives.

Who did not sign, and what happens to them?
Fourteen 2023 first-round players did not sign, per the Hoops Rumors recap: Anthony Black, Noah Clowney, Bilal Coulibaly, Gradey Dick, Scoot Henderson, Taylor Hendricks, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Dereck Lively II, Kris Murray, Marcus Sasser, Brice Sensabaugh, Ben Sheppard, Julian Strawther and Jarace Walker. They play 2026-27 on their rookie deals and become eligible for restricted free agency in the 2027 offseason, per Hoops Rumors.
Hoops Rumors names Dick, Hendricks, Murray and Sasser as players who must make their case this season to receive a qualifying offer. No source reviewed for this post lists the qualifying offer amounts, and none reports a dollar figure for any of the 14.

How unusual is a total of seven?
Seven is the fewest since 2018, when five players signed, per Hoops Rumors, and Wembanyama's was the only maximum deal. No source reviewed for this post gives a reason for the low total, so none is offered here. What happens to the 14 is covered in the offer sheet guide.
Who was left off the list?
Two players from the class, Cam Whitmore and Jordan Hawkins, were waived, per Hoops Rumors, so they are not in the group of 14 who did not sign.
What is still unconfirmed?
Two details are open. The exact dollar total of Wembanyama's extension depends on the salary cap in 2027-28, and reports differ on it. Hoops Rumors said the exact details of Miller's and Wallace's deals were still to be confirmed in its late recap. The salary-cap side of all this is in the NBA salary cap guide, and the pay scale the class started on is in the rookie scale guide.
The next marker is the qualifying offer decision on Dick, Hendricks, Murray and Sasser, which Hoops Rumors says those players must earn this season.
