Short answer

Under the 2026 WNBA collective bargaining agreement, each of 12 players on the champion earns a $60,000 bonus and each of 12 on the runner-up earns $20,000. The Finals MVP adds $30,000. For the Valkyries that is $720,000 across 12 players, and $90,000 for Gabby Williams, per Article IX of the agreement.

The Golden State Valkyries won the 2026 title with a 68-63 Game 7 win over the Atlanta Dream, per NBC Sports, as covered in the championship post. This guide answers what the result is worth to each player under the WNBA-WNBPA agreement, read from the text of Article IX. It is information, not legal or financial advice.

How much does each player on the champion earn?

The champion's bonus is $60,000 per player, paid to 12 players, per Article IX, Section 2. The runner-up pays 12 players $20,000 each. The same schedule pays players on teams eliminated earlier.

2026 playoff and Finals bonuses, per player
ResultPlayers paidPer player
WNBA champion12$60,000
Championship runner-up12$20,000
Eliminated in second round24$10,000
Eliminated in first round48$5,000
WNBA Finals MVP1$30,000

Multiplied out, the champion's 12 bonuses come to $720,000 and the runner-up's to $240,000. Those totals are derived from the schedule, not stated in it. The agreement caps all bonuses at a $3,000,000 league pool for 2026, split between team results and individual awards, per the same article, and the full list is in the guide to pay beyond base salary.

Who counts among the 12 players who get paid?

A player must be under a standard contract on her team's regular-season roster on the last day of the regular season, per Article IX, Section 1. Joining after that date, or being released before it, normally means no team bonus.

There is one exception. A player who was on the roster of a playoff team for two-thirds of the regular season, but was on no roster on the last day, receives $5,000 if she earned no playoff bonus with another team. The schedule pays 12 players per team.

What did the title add to Gabby Williams' pay?

Williams was named Finals MVP after scoring 30 points in Game 7, per NBC Sports. The agreement lists the champion bonus and the Finals MVP bonus on separate lines, so on the face of the schedule she is entitled to $60,000 plus $30,000, or $90,000, assuming she met the roster rule.

Put against base salary, that is one third of the $270,000 minimum, per the WNBA salaries guide. The $60,000 title bonus alone is about 22 percent of the minimum. For a player on a minimum contract, a title is a meaningful raise. For a player near the $1.4 million supermax, it is small.

Agents notice that players often track the headline salary and forget that bonuses arrive on a separate schedule and sit outside the base. Whether an agent's fee applies to bonus money depends on the player-agent agreement and the union's agent rules, so check the exact wording before assuming either way.

What did the Dream earn for reaching Game 7?

Each of 12 Atlanta players is entitled to $20,000 as runner-up, per Article IX, or $240,000 in total. That is $40,000 less per player than the Valkyries. The Dream also faced a scramble over where to play, covered in the arena scramble post.

Do the bonus amounts change in 2027?

Yes. From 2027, each amount moves at the same rate as the salary cap, per Article IX, Section 2(b). The cap is set at 20 percent of shared basketball revenue, per ESPN, defined as the prior year's combined league and team revenue.

That chain matters more than the 2026 figure. Revenue sets the salary cap, and the cap sets the bonuses. A franchise that sells out its arena, like the one valued in the Valkyries valuation breakdown, feeds that chain. No source promises the bonuses will rise, because that depends on revenue.

What does expansion mean for the bonuses?

The league is growing to 18 teams by 2030, with Cleveland starting in 2028, Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030, each paying a $250 million expansion fee, per NBC Washington. New teams add revenue to the pool that sets the cap, and the bonuses follow the cap. The agreement's schedule for 2026 was written for the current number of playoff slots, so a larger league may reopen it. The calendar for these teams is in the WNBA offseason guide, and how a new team builds from nothing is in the expansion draft rules.
