The WNBA is exploring games overseas in 2027: what it could mean for players' offseason overseas careers
The short version
The WNBA says it expects to do something outside North America in 2027, but no city, date or format is announced. The 2027 calendar is already set to change, with 50 games and a report date of the later of April 15 or the start of training camp, which matters to players who play overseas.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in April 2026 that the league is "heavily looking at" playing a game outside North America in 2027, per the Associated Press. The AP report ran April 13, before the 2026 draft. This post is checked against what has been reported through October 22, 2026.
What did the WNBA say about games overseas in 2027?
Engelbert said the league expects to do something outside North America next year as a true global game, and that it is weighing either an exhibition or a regular-season game abroad, per Just Women's Sports. The AP report names no location and no number of games, and it does not tie players to the overseas plan. The league recently expanded to Toronto, its first franchise outside the United States, so a game outside North America would be a separate step.

What is not known about the plan?
Almost everything that matters to a player's schedule:
- Where. No city or country has been named.
- When. No date, and no word on whether it falls in the preseason or the regular season.
- How many. No number of games, and no word on whether a game abroad would count toward the regular-season total.
- Pay. No reporting on travel terms or extra pay for players.
The league's own June 17 release on the longer season did not mention international games either, and said details on the 2027 schedule's footprint and key dates would come later, per the WNBA. No later announcement was found through October 22. Until one comes, this is an intention with every detail still open, not a scheduled event.

What does the 2027 calendar already change for players who play overseas?
The league will expand its regular season from 44 games to 50 starting in 2027, per the WNBA's June 17 release. Under the 2026 collective bargaining agreement, the latest possible end date moves to November 21, from October 31, and the earliest start stays April 1, per TSN. Starting in 2027, players must arrive in their home markets by the later of April 15 or the start of training camp, where the old date was May 1.
TSN notes that the later finish and earlier report date could affect players who play overseas in the offseason, including those in Project B, scheduled from November 2026 to April 2027 with a stop in Tokyo from March 26 to April 4. Put plainly, the window for an overseas season is shrinking at both ends before any game abroad is added to the WNBA calendar. How the prioritization rules apply is covered in how much WNBA players make under the new CBA.
What should players and agents check now?
Three questions belong in any 2026-27 overseas offer, and none of them depends on the overseas game becoming real:
- The 2027 report date. Does the club's last scheduled game, plus travel, clear the later of April 15 or the start of training camp with room to spare?
- Release. What happens in the contract if the player needs to leave early for the WNBA, and who pays?
- Core status. A team can hold a veteran's rights for a year, which shapes where she can plan her offseason, as the WNBA core designation guide explains.
The contract side of an overseas deal, from net pay to exit clauses, is in the overseas contracts guide. A game abroad could add another date to that calendar, but until the league names one, the 50-game season and the 2027 report date are the dates to plan around.
